4:00pm - Arrive at the summit of Haleakala and start hiking the Keoneheehee (Sliding Sands) Trail. This trail takes you down into the crater and offers incredible views of the volcanic landscape. Hike as far as you feel comfortable before turning back. Be sure to bring plenty of water and snacks.

Other options:

The trail follows a ridge through a forest of native plants and offers scenic views of the crater and surrounding landscape. It's important to note that the trail can be muddy and slippery in some areas, so sturdy hiking shoes are recommended.

  2. Pa Ka'oao Trail: This trail is a short and easy 0.4-mile round-trip hike that begins at the summit of Haleakala. The trail leads to a viewpoint that offers panoramic views of the crater and surrounding area. 3. Hosmer Grove Trail: This trail is a 1.7-mile loop trail that begins at the Hosmer Grove Campground at an elevation of 7,000 feet. The trail passes through a forest of introduced trees and offers views of the surrounding landscape. The trail is relatively flat and easy to navigate, making it a good option for families and those looking for a shorter hike.

6:00pm - As sunset approaches, find a spot to watch the sunset over the crater. It's a spectacular sight and well worth the wait.

7:00pm - After the sunset, head back up to the summit to watch the stars come out. The summit of Haleakala is one of the best places in the world to stargaze, so be sure to take advantage of it. Bring warm clothing as it can get chilly at this altitude.
